What is the GATE score required for admission?
The most important thing for MTech admission is the GATE cutoff. Every year IITs and NITs release different GATE cutoffs for their MTech programmes. This cutoff is the minimum score that a student of any branch or category requires to get admission. The cutoff is different for each college, branch and category and depends on many factors like the difficulty level of the exam, available seats, number of applicants and overall performance of the students.
For 2025, GATE result was declared on 19 March and now the CCMT (for NITs) and COAP (for IITs) counselling process has started. Top NITs like NIT Trichy, NIT Warangal, NIT Surathkal have usually high cutoff - here the cutoff for popular branches like Computer Science for general category can go up to 700-800, while in newly established NITs it ranges between 400-700. Cutoffs for SC/ST students are a little lower, like in the 200-400 range.
IITs also release branch-wise and category-wise cutoffs for their MTech courses. These cutoffs are updated on the COAP portal after the counselling rounds. Understanding the cutoff is important as you will get to know which college and branch you can get admission in based on your GATE score.
MTech Course Cutoffs: Sample Table (NIT Trichy 2024)
MTech Course Name | Round 1 (Closing Score) | Last Round (Closing Score) |
Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) | 749 | 712 |
Data Analytics | 715 | 656 |
Chemical Engineering | 370 | 411 |
Structural Engineering | 601 | 542 |
Power Electronics | 587 | 499 |
VLSI System | 677 | 628 |
The cutoff may change every year, so always check the latest cutoffs on the official CCMT or COAP counselling portal. Shortlisting the options according to your GATE score and keeping the preference order correct improves your chances of admission considerably.
Tip: If your score is a little low then you can consider Newly Established Niches or Less Popular branches, there the cutoff is a little lower!
