How Many Seats Now?
Before, IITs had about 17,760 seats for B.Tech courses. Now, with 400 extra seats, the total has become 18,160 seats.
Not only IITs, even other colleges that take admission through JoSAA counselling like NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs have also added seats. Overall, 2,916 more seats have been added this year. This is really good because more students will get seats.

Why Are Seats Increasing?
There are two main reasons:
- More students are giving JEE every year, but seats were almost the same for a long time. So, the government is increasing seats slowly.
- New courses are starting in subjects like Artificial Intelligence (AI), Data Science, and Robotics. These are trending fields and need more seats.
The government also said that by 2029, they will add 6,500 more seats in IITs. So, the total seats will become about 25,000 in the coming years.

Cutoff will come down a little
If seats increase, then cutoff ranks will go down a bit. So, if you missed IIT by a few hundred ranks last year, you may get a seat this year.

During JoSAA counselling, there are many rounds. With more seats, your chance of getting a good branch in later rounds is higher.
New IITs become better options
IITs like Bhilai, Goa, Dharwad are improving fast. They now have more seats and better facilities. You can think about these too.
Reserved category students benefit
Seats for SC, ST, OBC, and EWS students also increase. So, if you belong to these categories, chances are better.

Most extra seats are for new and trending subjects like:

But Competition Is Still Tough

- Fill more choices in JoSAA – Don’t select only top IITs. Add new IITs also.
