IIT Admission 2025 – Extra Seats Allotted and Higher Girl Quota Explained

IIT Admission 2025: Seats Go Beyond Limit – Full Details

Getting a seat in IIT is a big dream for many students in India. These colleges are the best for engineering. Every year, lakhs of students try for IIT by giving JEE Advanced exam. But this year something new happened – IITs gave more seats than their official limit. Let’s understand what happened in very simple words.

How many seats are there in IITs?

Every IIT has a fixed number of seats. This is called sanctioned seats. For 2025, all IITs together had 18,160 seats.

But when the admission list came out, the total number of students who got seats was 18,188. That means 28 seats extra were given! You may think – How is this possible in IIT, where rules are so strict? Let me explain.

Which IITs gave extra seats?

Some top IITs gave a few more seats than their limit. Here is the list:

IIT NameOfficial SeatsAdmitted StudentsExtra Seats
IIT Bombay1,3601,3644
IIT Delhi1,2391,2412
IIT Kanpur1,2101,2155
IIT Kharagpur1,9191,9234
IIT Madras1,1211,1243
IIT Hyderabad6306311
IIT (ISM) Dhanbad1,2101,2133

Only IIT BHU Varanasi gave one seat less than their limit.

Why did IITs give extra seats?

There are two big reasons:

1. Students leave seats

After counseling, some students leave IIT seats because they get admission in NIT, IIIT or in a foreign college. To make sure no seat is empty, JoSAA (the body that manages seat allotment) fills these seats in the last rounds. Because of this, sometimes extra students get seats.

2. Special category seats

Some extra seats are made for special cases like:

  • Girls (female-only seats)
  • Foreign students, OCI and PIO candidates
  • Defense category students

These are called supernumerary seats (extra seats). They do not replace regular seats. They are added on top of the normal number.

Good news for girls – More seats for women

This year, more girls got admission in IIT. Out of all students, 3,664 are girls. This is about 20% of total seats.

Some IITs did even better:

  • IIT Tirupati – 21.57% girls
  • IIT Madras – 21.09%
  • IIT Roorkee – 20.50%

This is possible because IITs give special seats for girls to increase their numbers.

Other extra seats this year

Apart from regular seats, some extra admissions happened:

  • 9 seats for defense category
  • 11 seats for foreign/OCI/PIO students
  • 12 seats under minimum cut-off
  • 96 seats for OCI/PIO students treated as Indians

This is why the final number went above the original limit.

How was it last year?

In 2024, there were 17,760 seats, and almost all were filled. In 2025, the seats increased to 18,160. Every year, IITs are adding more seats slowly.

In 2019, all IIT seats were filled perfectly. There were never any empty seats at that time.

What does this mean for students?

If you are preparing for JEE, this news is important for you:

  • IITs are making sure no seat is wasted.
  • There are more chances for girls now.
  • Seats are increasing slowly every year.

Competition is still very tough, but these changes give some extra hope.

Final words

IITs are trying to be student-friendly. They are giving every seat to some student and also encouraging more girls to join. If you are preparing, keep studying hard. Also, learn about JoSAA rules and special categories. These details can help you get admission.
